And for neutral but conspiracy-adjacent queries such as Rothschild family, Bing returns 10 articles espousing anti-Semitic theories of Rothschild world hegemony in its top 50, while Google returns two conspiratorial results. The same is true for Bing’s treatment of known sources of health misinformation: in response to queries for vaccines autism, Bing returns six anti-vax sites in its top 50 results. For example, in response to a search for “ white helmets” - the Syrian civil defense group that has been the subject of disinformation campaigns conducted by the Syrian and Russian governments-Bing shows users at least 12 disinformation articles and untrustworthy sources in its top 50 results.
And when these sites show up in both search engines’ results for a given query, they are returned higher in Bing’s, sometimes even appearing on the first page. In particular, known purveyors of disinformation, including sites that have been identified by DFR Lab and others, show up more frequently in Bing’s results than in Google’s. Across the top 50 results for 12 separate queries (a total of 600 results), Bing returned at least 125 sources of disinformation and misinformation, while Google returned 13. In general, Bing returns disinformation and misinformation at a significantly higher rate than Google does.Here are some key takeaways from our analysis: We programmatically ran 13 queries on Bing and Google and compared the top 50 results for each query across the two search engines. Thus, when we say Bing shows its users a lot of disinformation, we mean specifically that it shows a lot more disinformation than Google. Google, which has been the focus of intense media criticism for its failures to combat abuse on its platforms, including the gaming of its algorithms by Holocaust deniers, has made it clear that it will take new steps to “ tackle the propagation of false or misleading information.” As a result, Google is, for better or worse, the closest thing we have to a standard point of comparison for how search engines handle disinformation and misinformation. And while researchers have written about Bing’s troubled record on abusive content, specifically with regard to how it has handled autocomplete suggestions, there have been no broader studies of the prevalence of disinformation and misinformation in Bing’s top search results. Bing’s somewhat irregular results and hands-off approach to topics like suicide have attracted users’ attention before, even earning the distinction of becoming a meme. It is something of a problem, then, that Bing appears to be returning an alarming amount of disinformation and misinformation in response to user queries - far more than Google does, for instance. and serves five billion searches per month: Microsoft itself boasts that Bing enjoys a 33% market share in the U.S.
